Background of the Study
Benue State, often referred to as the "Food Basket of the Nation," is known for its agricultural productivity and rural landscapes. Farm-stay tourism, which involves tourists staying on farms to experience rural life and agricultural practices, offers a unique opportunity to promote rural development.
Farm-stay tourism can create income-generating opportunities for farmers, foster cultural exchange, and enhance the rural economy. It also promotes sustainable agricultural practices by raising awareness among tourists. However, despite its potential, farm-stay tourism remains largely untapped in Benue State due to challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, lack of awareness, and limited marketing.
This study assesses the potential of farm-stay tourism as a tool for rural development in Benue State, identifying barriers and strategies for effective implementation.
Statement of the Problem
Despite its agricultural potential, Benue State faces challenges in achieving rural development, including poverty, unemployment, and youth migration. Farm-stay tourism, which could address these issues, is underdeveloped due to poor infrastructure, limited promotion, and a lack of institutional support.
Without a concerted effort to develop farm-stay tourism, the state risks missing out on opportunities to diversify its rural economy and improve the livelihoods of its residents.
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the potential of farm-stay tourism as a means of rural development in Benue State.
To identify the challenges affecting the development of farm-stay tourism in the state.
To propose strategies for promoting farm-stay tourism to achieve rural development.
